Alpha Xi Delta Teams with Autism Speaks!
The Iota Xi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta is excited to spread awareness and raise money for Autism Speaks on the WPI campus. Autism Speaks is the world's largest autism advocacy organization and is dedicated to increasing awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Autism Speaks funds research about the causes, prevention, and treatments for Autism and advocates for the needs of individuals and families affected by Autism.
With 1 in 68 children diagnosed with Autism and no known cure, Autism is a serious and widespread disorder. Alpha Xi Delta is committed to improving the lives of those children and families affected by Autism. We hope our fundraising and awareness efforts can help put one more piece of the Autism puzzle in place.
Philanthropic Activities to Benefit Autism Speaks
Since Autism Speaks became the national philanthropy of Alpha Xi Delta in 2009, the Iota Xi chapter has hosted and participated in several philanthropic endeavors. In early A-term, the sisters held a Tug-of-War tournament with the brothers of TKE that raised money for the Autism Speaks and St. Jude Children’s Hospital Foundations. The Iota Xi chapter of Alpha Xi Delta also volunteered at the annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks. Sisters were able to play with the children in the Kid's Corner and learn a little bit more about the effects of living with an Autistic child. Along with this, the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta table in the Campus Center for fundraising through various events, all year long. New sisters create their own philanthropy event in efforts to raise money for Autism Speaks, and in the past they have done a scratch ticket raffle, sold Hershey kisses, and more. The most recent New Members sold chocolate puzzle piece lollipops, making a great contribution to our fundraising goal.
Along with smaller advocacy events such as “waffle house”, one of our most successful fundraisers, we also make pancakes for other greek organizations on campus every fall. Every spring the Iota Xi chapter holds an annual Amaxing Challenge, this year deciding to host our first “Step it Up” 5K. Where students could register for a glow in the dark run at night; the event raises a large amount of money for Autism Speaks each year while informing our campus of this important issue.
Other Community Service Activities
Aside from our work with Autism Speaks, the Iota Xi chapter also participates in a number of other community service events and philanthropic endeavors both on and off campus. These include working with other organizations on campus to host events like community service weekends, which we participate in with Sigma Pi to help out the Worcester community; and Work on Worcester, a campus-wide event that puts students and sisters to work throughout Worcester. In addition, we have high levels of participation in WPI’s Relay for Life and frequently get involved in other service events on campus.
